Nike is cooperating with investigators in a $30m case of alleged bribery to sponsor Brazil’s national team

The conspiracy alleged today between a global soccer official and sports marketer includes one particularly juicy blind item: A description of an unnamed US multinational sportswear company paying the Brazilian national soccer federation $160 million in 1996 to be their official sponsor—and paying an additional $30 million to a shell company in order to win the contract.

Progresso, de actie in Zürich is wat breder dan Brazilië, het gaat om meerdere personen in verband met de FIFA. Volgens mij heeft dit overal het nieuws wel gehaald.

Corruptie komt zelfs buiten Brazilië voor, misschien wel dichter bij huis dan je denkt...

Het is hoogst waarschijnlijk Nike, de sponsor van het Nationale Braziliaanse team die een hoofdrol heeft gespeeld in het hele gebeuren:

Nike Inc. said it’s cooperating with authorities on the same day the U.S. unsealed charges saying an unidentified sportswear company took part in bribing a Brazilian soccer official for a sponsorship agreement.

The deal described in an indictment of FIFA officials mirrors one obtained by Nike. The charges refer to a U.S. company that signed a partnership with the Brazilian federation in 1996. Nike, based in Beaverton, Oregon, announced its decade-long pact with Brazil that year.

“Nike believes in ethical and fair play in both business and sport and strongly opposes any form of manipulation or bribery,” the company said Wednesday in an e-mailed statement. “We have been cooperating, and will continue to cooperate, with the authorities.” Nike, which isn’t named in the indictment, declined to comment on the allegations.

Het gaat om een aantal zaken:

1: Copa America. Zeg maar de Zuid-Amerikaanse champions league waarin het Braziliaanse sportmarketing bedrijf Traffic Brazil een zeer grote rol speelt (US$110 miljoen smeergeld etc)
2. Gold Cup Noord-en Midden Amerika met dezelfde tussenpersooon als Copa America
3. WM keuze 2010
4. Fifa presidentsverkiezingen
5. Braziliaans natinaalteam/Nike
6. Copa Libertadors

Verder is de 83 jarige José Maria Marin gearresteerd. Marin was tijdens de dictatuur gouverneur van de staat Sao Paulo, had volgens mij daarna een hoge post in het regime en was president van het organisatiecommitee van het WK2014. De man wacht op uitlevering naar de USA.

Verrassender wijze wordt er niet over het WK2014 in de aanklachten gesproken.
